South Western Ontario Region (SWOR) History

The Waterford Wado-Kai Karate Club was opened in September 1984 by Sensei Lawrence Blakemore, assisted by Sensei Jim Gratton.  The dojo operated out of the W. F. Hewitt Public School until the 1986/87 season when it was moved to the present location at St. Bernard's Separate School.

Sensei Gratton became the head instructor in the 1988 season while Sensei Blakemore developed other clubs in the Haldimand/Norfolk area. Locations were Hagersville, Caledonia, and Teeterville.

In 1990, Sensei Tom Martens took over the club and operated it until the 1991/92 season.  Sensei Blakemore returned to the club in September of 1992 as head instructor.  The Waterford club is the honbu dojo (home club) for all the clubs in the South Western Regional Wado-Kai Organization under Sensei Blakemore which was incorporated in 1993.

During the late 1980,s and early 1990s other dojos were opened by various black belts under Sensei Blakemore and by himself such as Brantford, Ingersoll, Paris, Aylmer, Jarvis, Langton,Burford, Norwich, Okotoks, AB.
